Subject: Pan-European Pensions: EC Researchers Feasibility Study

Paul Bonser will discuss the key findings of the study Hewitt prepared for the EC earlier this year looking at the feasibility of establishing a cross-border pension scheme available for European-based researchers.

The talk/discussion will cover the following aspects:

- State of the cross-border market
- Different cross-border vehicles
- Choice of home-country location
- Host country considerations
- Governance/administration
- Conclusions

Paul Bonser is an international benefits actuary and Principal with Hewitt Associates, and a senior member of the company's Global International Benefits practice. Paul leads Hewitt's Pan European Pension strategy initiative, and consults with many major multinational companies on a full range of international employee benefit issues. He was previously responsible for Hewitt's Swiss and Austrian pension and benefit practices, and the development of Hewitt’s retirement consulting business in the European Emerging markets, focusing on CEE, Russia, Scandinavia and Greece/Turkey. He has worked in the UK, Greece, Switzerland and Austria.

Subject: UK budgetary changes to pension tax relief: Part 2

Rhys Thomas will examine the implications for high earners (including expatriates) of the new measures affecting pension tax relief that the government is planning to introduce with effect from 6 April 2011.

This talk follows an earlier presentation that Rhys gave jointly with Bob Sperl of Towers Watson on 10 November 2009. Since then, the government’s proposals have changed considerably.

Rhys is a pensions lawyer at Speechly Bircham LLP. Rhys has a particular interest in QROPSs (qualifying recognised overseas pension schemes) and QNUPSs (qualifying non-UK pension schemes) and other aspects of international pension provision. Rhys is a member of the IEBA Committee and holds the Diploma in International Employee Benefits. He is a regular speaker on pensions topics and has written a number of articles and contributed to a number of publications, including helping to prepare the pensions section in the book Drafting Employment Documents for Expatriates (2009).
